Ch 84: The Shen Family Started Sending Telegrams
Cao Shuangxi’s lips trembled, and she said nothing more.
Meanwhile, Shen Mingyue and Gu Yuanzhou were almost home. On the way, Gu Yuanzhou shared his opinion.
“That girl in your shop is a bit strange. Be careful.”
Shen Mingyue tilted her head, somewhat surprised. She thought Gu Yuanzhou was a straight man, but he was unexpectedly perceptive.
“It’s not that she’s strange. It’s because you’re so handsome that you’ve captivated the girl. She probably has a crush on you. What should we do about this?”
Gu Yuanzhou’s face darkened. “Then I’ll go to your shop less often.”
Shen Mingyue was furious. This man was so good at attracting attention! How long had she been here, and she had already seen so many female comrades interested in him. One Zhou Xiaofei, one Song Xue, and now even a new shop assistant was captivated by him. These were just the ones she knew about; she wondered how many more there were.
Being with a man like this, it was impossible not to feel pressure. Thankfully, Gu Yuanzhou was still fairly well-behaved, unlike other men. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be able to last a single day.
“It’s fine. Go if you want, as long as you remain virtuous.”
Gu Yuanzhou’s lips curled into a slight smile. His wife was so funny.
When the two arrived home, Wang Cuie was sitting on the sofa, looking distraught and unwell.
Shen Mingyue saw her like this and thought she had been bullied again.
“Mom, what’s wrong?”
Wang Cuie, seeing her daughter return, stammered, “The family sent a telegram, asking me to buy a ticket back home immediately.”
Shen Fuzhu somehow got the Gu family’s address and had his daughter write a telegram.
As soon as he returned to Shenjia Village, Shen Fuzhu didn’t even think about Wang Cuie. She was a living person, and she was with Shen Mingyue; nothing could possibly have happened to her.
After squandering the money the Huo family gave them, their two sons couldn’t take it anymore.
When Wang Cuie was around, she helped them with laundry, cooking, and childcare. Life was incredibly easy. Now that she was gone, they had to do all the work themselves, and within a few days, they couldn’t take it anymore.
Especially the eldest son’s wife, she kept urging her father-in-law to call her mother-in-law back.
Shen Fuzhu thought about it and agreed. Without his wife, life was uncomfortable. So, he asked the Huo family for the Gu family’s address and had his son send a telegram.
The telegram not only asked Wang Cuie to return but also asked her to bring money.
This was the eldest daughter-in-law’s idea. Hearing that Shen Mingyue had married into such a rich husband’s family, she naturally wanted to get a share.
Shen Fuzhu also thought it was reasonable and even demanded a large sum, insisting that Wang Cuie must bring back one thousand yuan, or he would kill her.
Wang Cuie had finally enjoyed a few comfortable days, but it was all over now, and she was naturally heartbroken.
Although her daughter had said she could stay at the Gu family’s home, Wang Cuie understood that a married daughter is like water spilled, and being cared for for these two days was already good enough; how could she possibly stay here indefinitely?
Besides, it wasn’t reasonable. In the village, it was the sons’ responsibility to support their parents in old age, not the daughters. Moreover, Shen Mingyue had never enjoyed a comfortable life in their home since she was a child, so how could she possibly keep adding trouble for her daughter?
“Go back to do what? Go back to serve them?”
Shen Mingyue frowned and instinctively retorted.
She never told lies. Since she had asked Wang Cuie to stay, she intended to take care of her for the rest of her life.
“Mingyue, I know you’re doing this for Mom’s sake, but I’m not old yet. How can I keep staying here and adding trouble for you? I’ve thought about it carefully. Help me buy a ticket tomorrow, and I’ll take the bus back.”
Wang Cuie looked at Shen Mingyue cautiously, feeling that she was being too much. Her daughter was so kind to her, yet she was asking Shen Mingyue to pay for her bus ticket.
Shen Mingyue didn’t speak but directly looked at the telegram. It said that not only should Wang Cuie return but that she should also bring one thousand yuan.
These Shen family members were so obsessed with money! They were ugly and their desires were out of line. Even if she were rich, she wouldn’t give them a cent.
“He even wants you to bring money back. If you go back empty-handed, won’t he beat you to death? I don’t want to repeat myself. You’re not adding trouble by staying here; you’re helping. I’m pregnant, running around all day. I’ll need you to take care of me after I give birth. Mom, tell me honestly, would you rather go home to work than help me with my confinement period? If so, I’ll send you back tomorrow.”
Shen Mingyue deliberately used reverse psychology.
Sure enough, this trick worked. Wang Cuie immediately denied it.
“Mom, of course, I want to take care of you. It’s just that I’ve caused you so much trouble these past few days, and I feel really bad about it.”
“Alright, do as I say. You don’t need to go back to that family. Nobody there cares about you. Going back would only be suffering. Just stay at the Gu family’s place. We’ll find time to divorce Shen Fuzhu. I’ll help you with this.”
Shen Mingyue didn’t even call him “Dad.” In her heart, Shen Fuzhu wasn’t even considered a person.
Wang Cuie nodded, sighing again, “If I’m not home, your sister will probably have a hard time.”
Shen Mingxia was the youngest and had a mild temperament. She didn’t have Shen Fuzhu’s bad habits, so she was relatively alright.
But because she was so introverted and didn’t talk much, the original owner didn’t interact with her much. Hearing Wang Cuie say this, Shen Mingyue frowned.
“Anyway, think about it. If you’re willing to divorce Shen Fuzhu, then I’ll find a way to bring Mingxia here too. I won’t worry about the rest of them.”
Besides Wang Cuie and Shen Mingxia, none of the Shen family members were good people.
Shen Mingyue didn’t want to get entangled with these people. She wished she could cut ties immediately.
Hearing the word “divorce” again, Wang Cuie fell silent. Divorce was something she had never dared to think about before. Everyone said that a woman should follow her husband’s family; in the village, there were women who had been beaten to death by their husbands, and no one cared.
But now she had a backer. Her daughter was so capable and was supporting her. If she didn’t seize this opportunity, she might just stay like this for the rest of her life.
“Mingyue, Mom will think about it and tell you when I’ve decided.”
Shen Mingyue nodded. She knew that the older generation had more feudal thinking and needed time to accept things. There was no rush; she would wait until Wang Cuie had made up her mind.
Lying in bed that night, Shen Mingyue couldn’t help but tell Gu Yuanzhou about the report against her.
“I’m not gossiping about others. It was Zhou Xiaofei and Song Xue who did this. I’ve never provoked them, but they relentlessly targeted me, and I can’t swallow this.”
Hearing this, Gu Yuanzhou’s expression became serious.
Shen Mingyue could teach at school; it was a source of pride for her parents. Zhou Xiaofei, for her own selfish desires, teamed up with an outsider to sabotage Shen Mingyue. It was too much.
“So, what do you want to do?”
Gu Yuanzhou sought Shen Mingyue’s opinion.
