Chapter 36: My Place
Mizukoto-san lives in a girls’ dormitory in Tokyo?
I’ve never heard of that.
I asked my dad over the phone.
“Does Suqin-san know about that?”
“I was just about to tell you. As long as Suqin-san agrees, we can get you a dorm room right away.”
“It’s such short notice… I don’t think I’ll be able to transfer to a girls’ school over there in time.
“The school’s chancellor and I went to college together. Because of that, we’re going to get you a room in the dormitory. Well, the transfer itself might be after winter break, but when I asked him about your high school grades, he said it shouldn’t be a problem.”
“The girls’ schools over there are prestigious, so it’s not a bad deal. Best of all, if you can go somewhere where you won’t have to look far, that’s the best.”
“Okay, but what would Suqin-san say…”
“Of course, if you don’t want to, I’ll reconsider. But I can’t live in the same apartment with you forever.”
Well, I guess you’re right, but…
“Yes. How are Akiho and Naho?”
Akiho-san is Kaho’s mother.
My father and Kaho’s mother have known each other since childhood.
She sometimes asks me about my father.
I’m fine, I guess,” I said, and he looked relieved, and then he said, “I’m sorry for all the trouble I’ve caused you all of a sudden, but I have to get back to work. I have to get back to work.” And he hung up the phone.
I was stunned.
It’s true that Suqin said she’ll leave as soon as she gets a new house.
I didn’t think she’d stay in my apartment.
But I can’t believe it was decided so suddenly.
I went back to the cafeteria and found Mizukoto-san sitting at the table waiting for me with the food she had bought from the cafeteria.
You should have eaten first.
“Because… I came here to have dinner with Haruhito.
Suikin-san mumbled softly as she looked away.
I wonder where the big tree that was here just now went?
He went away because he didn’t want to disturb us.
“Oh, yeah. You don’t have to worry about that.”
“I think you should be concerned about it. Because we’re lovers, I don’t think it’s wrong for you to be concerned about me like that.”
Suqin-san said in a clear voice.
I thought you were pretending to be my girlfriend.
I think she’s saying, “Sweetheart.” I think she’s just saying “girlfriend.
“Well, if Oki was so considerate, I don’t want to waste it, so why don’t we both eat?”
Mizukoto-san looked at the katsudon in front of her and the one on my tray.
And smiles happily.
“In that sense, I would have preferred something more fashionable instead of katsudon.”
“No. I’m just glad that it’s with Haruhito. But…”
“I thought if we ordered something else, we could feed each other.”
Suikin-san looked so disappointed from the bottom of her heart that I thought she was smiling.
The food in the cafeteria is cheap and you can come here every day, so it’s easy to get the complete set without having to exchange it little by little.
But if Suikin-san goes to Tokyo, that may not be possible.
“Haruhi-kun, will you come to the cafeteria with me again tomorrow? And you’re going to make lunch for me, right?”
I answered Mizukoto-san as I picked up the pork cutlet with egg from the pork cutlet bowl with chopsticks.
I’m looking forward to it.
I’m a bit nervous, but I have to tell Suikoto-san about the girls’ dormitory in Tokyo.
I don’t know why.
Do I really want Suikoto-san to stay in the same room with me?
We finished our lunch, returned the dishes and left the cafeteria.
Then we walk along the corridor back to the main building.
The noon sunlight was shining strongly through the glass windows, slightly easing the December cold.
There were many students walking back from the cafeteria as well, and many of them were standing around chatting with each other.
I asked Suikoto as we walked.
“Suikin-san, when you first came to my room, you said you were going to leave when you found your next place to live, right?”
“Yeah, but… But that’s a long time from now. I can’t rely on my relatives anymore except for Haruhito and the others, and I don’t think I’ll be able to find them that easily.”
What if I told you we’d find him soon?
Suqin stopped and looked back at us.
And his blue eyes widen.
I explained what my dad told me.
I see. I’ll get a call from Haruhito’s father later.”
“Yeah. It’s short notice, and you can say no if you don’t want to.”
“So… Yeah. Does it bother you when I’m home, Haruto? No, I’m sure it’s annoying. You just show up and take up a whole room, and then you catch a cold and fall asleep, and then everyone in class makes a fuss…”
“I’ve told you a hundred times, I’m not trying to be a pain in the ass.”
I said slowly to reassure her and she stared back at me.
Something’s still missing.
I felt Suqin-san was saying that in her heart.
I thought about it, I chose my words.
“It’s quite fun for me to be here, too, Suikin-san.”
“I’m fun to be with… “is fun.”
“I’ve been living alone since my sister Ame disappeared. So I think it makes her happy to have someone to cook for and talk with.”
Does that mean you want me to stay home?
“I don’t care what you think.”
I looked away from Suikoto.
Maybe I’m blushing too, I thought.
Suqin-san says in a bouncy voice.
I see. So it’s okay for me to stay here with you. I’m so happy.”
“Do you want to turn down the offer of a girls’ dormitory?”
Suikoto-san quietly approached me.
And you look into my eyes.
“If we were lovers, would we hug each other at a time like this?”
Maybe so. But we’re not…”
We’re lovers, aren’t we?
That’s the way it’s supposed to be.
That’s true, but…
“So, do you want a hug?”
But I’m embarrassed to hug you. I mean…”
I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to do this, but I’m going to have to.
That means you want me to hug you.
It’s not cool to say that you can’t do it here.
I’m ready for it and quietly approach Mizukoto-san.
Mizukoto shivered, but I held her in my arms.
I can feel Suikoto-san’s warmth through her sailor suit.
I’m worried about what people will think, but I’m starting to think it’s okay.
If you don’t like it, I’ll let you go.
I said, and Suikin-san shook her head to the side and smiled softly.
“I don’t mind at all. I’m really happy. Haruhikun made a place for me, and he’s spoiling me like this.”
