I Was Reincarnated As The Older Brother Of A Villainess Destined to Die, So I Want To Change The Future By Raising My Younger Sister With My Own Hands – Volume 3 – Interlude – Akatsuki: The Root of Obsession (2)

“I have a question for you, okay? You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.”

After a while, after I saw that Zechs’ eyes had returned to normal, I asked him a question. It’s something that’s been bothering me ever since I met him. On the other hand, I was hesitant to go into it.

The reason I ask at this time is because we’re on equal footing now. With our disparity in ability, my question will inevitably have coercive power. I wanted to avoid that. I really believe that you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.

Zechs takes a moment to think about it. Then he says briefly, “Here you go.” Zechs replies shortly.

I asked him out of the blue.

Why would you risk your life for your sister?

It was a fundamental question for him. That’s why he couldn’t go into it for a long time.

Zechs looks puzzled.

“Why… Why can’t it be because I like you?”

“That may be true. But it wasn’t always that way, was it? You decided to help your sister right after she was born. That doesn’t add up.

It’s true Zechs loves his sister. I know that from what he says and does every day.

But that doesn’t explain why you decided to overthrow your sister’s fate. He couldn’t possibly love his newborn sister enough to risk her life. I’m sure he had other motives than love for his sister.

I gasped. Because Zechs’ face was drained of emotion. His eyes were so vacant and empty you’d think he was dead. Despair is lukewarm. Zechs was something like a bottomless swamp.

When I was in a state of shock at the unexpected situation, he muttered something to me.

“It’s a boring story.”

His voice was as emotionless as his expression.

“I had a sister in a previous life. She was sickly. Most of the time she lived on the bed.”

The stories Zechs told me about his past life were quite new to me. He seemed to keep this life and his previous life separate from each other, and he never talked about this kind of things. If it hadn’t been for this kind of talk, I’m sure he would have been more interested in it.

“So it was inevitable that he’d gravitate toward geeky hobbies that he could enjoy indoors. I’m especially fond of video games, so I was forced to play a lot of them with him. Yuseiki… My sister was the one who started playing games modeled after this world.”

“Didn’t you say before that you started this because you wanted to do the hero’s side of the story?”

I managed to regain my composure and threw a question, including a question about the timing.

Then Zechs smiles bitterly.

“It’s not a contradiction in terms. I saw my sister doing it and I got interested.”

“I see.”

“Well, you know how this story settles down…”

Zechs grits his teeth and spins his words as if he were about to vomit blood.

“I saw Karon with my sister in a previous life. I couldn’t protect her then, but I can protect her now.”

“I mean…”

“In a previous life, my sister died. Right after I left for college. She had an accident right in front of me and died from the after-effects.

I didn’t know what to say.

We don’t know anything about Zechs’ relationship with his sister or anything from his past life. He must have deliberately avoided mentioning them. Even so, I could tell from his mannerisms and his disturbed magic that they were close to each other. The shock of losing someone so dear to you in front of your eyes must have been indescribably painful.

I bow down.

I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked so easily.

Zechs smiles dryly.

“Hey, hey, hey, heads up. I’m the one who told him when he could’ve told me not to. You don’t have to apologize. I’m over my past life. Don’t worry about it.”

“Yeah, right.”

Barely a nod.

How can you say that you’re divided? The fact that you’re conveying emotions you can’t foresee is proof that you’re very disturbed.

I can’t see any more emotional disturbance.

Then he smiles.

“It’s true that we’re splitting up, okay? It’s been a long time since I’ve thought about my sister from a previous life. And though I saw her in Kalon at first, I don’t anymore. From the bottom of my heart I care about her and I want to protect her.”

There was no hesitation or confusion in his voice. I believe that he was speaking from the bottom of his heart.

I let out a breath and nodded.

“Okay. Okay, good. I’m sorry for asking such a stupid question.

I don’t care. Like I said, it was my choice to speak.

“Okay, okay. I won’t say anything more.

Zechs’ presence returns to normal and the tense atmosphere fades away.

But inside I was getting nervous. That I might have made the wrong choice.

Zekes’ feelings for his loved ones turned out to be more than he bargained for. If they were harmed, would he be able to keep his sanity?

If he’s gone mad, the most powerful being in the world will run amok. I didn’t even want to think about that.

A natural sigh escapes me.

The die has been cast. Since it is impossible to weaken him, we can only hope that he will accomplish his goal.

Please keep the peace between Zechs and his precious.

I prayed to the heavens as if I were a stranger.
