My name is Minerva Alleni y Kari Loramvel. Eldest daughter of the Dukes of Lorambell and the recipient of the magical gift of black hair.
As the daughter of a respected father and a gifted dark-haired girl, I’m devoted to magic. I know most girls my age are interested in more than just magic, but I’m not. Because magic is so full of possibilities, and there’s something new to discover every day. There’s no time for second-guessing.
But I can’t be consumed by magic. As a duchess, you have to achieve results in your studies and your arts. Fortunately, I’m a very gifted girl, so it wasn’t too hard for me.
I’m blessed with good circumstances, status, talent, and good looks. There is not a cloud in my life. If I have one complaint, it’s that the people who are drawn to my brilliance are all a bunch of jerks. They’re all such sycophants. It’s disgusting.
Well, such complaints are trivial to the path I’m on. I’m going to be a great wizard, one your father would be proud of.
–That’s what I was thinking,
One day, I was summoned by your father and the first thing he said to me was “get engaged”. The topic was so out of the blue that I let out a gasp.
The father, on the other hand, did not pay any attention to my situation and proceeded with his story.
“You will wed the eldest son of Foranada. His house has produced a light wizard. Their blood is at our throats. If we make this match while we still can, we may be able to bring a child of the light wizard Caroline into the world as a betrothed to a duke. They’ve given their consent. The meeting is in early May. Make your preparations by then.”
Can you hold on a second?
After listening to what was being said one after another, I was finally able to reboot myself.
Isn’t this all too sudden? Just the other day your father said he wouldn’t get engaged until the last minute.
My good looks and talent are powerful cards in politics. They must be used carefully. I agree with you, and that’s why I’ve been working so hard to improve my abilities.
And now this sudden change of policy. What the hell is going on?
“I understand your desire for the blood of a light wizard. But isn’t it a bit far-fetched to be bound to a blood relative instead of the person you desire? Wouldn’t it be better to betroth your brothers to the light wizard in question?”
Your eldest son, Brother Ares, is already engaged to a woman, so it’s difficult for him to be a full-fledged wife. It’s hard to think of anyone else to marry. But Brother Hermes is only three years older and has no fiancée. He’s the best choice.
But there was no way that your father would not have taken into consideration what I could think of. He replied without hesitation.
“There are two reasons not to use the Hermes. One, the royal families are trying to take Caroline. The other is that if we move to take her in directly, there’s a good chance we’ll fail.”
The former is understandable. Even if House Lorambr is a noble family we have to be loyal to the Holy King to some extent.
“Miss Caroline has a serious affection for her brother. I find it hard to believe that such a person would allow herself to fall in love with anyone of the opposite sex other than her brother. I checked with her directly to be sure, but that’s quite something.”
Not so much.
Unusually, your father nodded his head, looking somewhat tired.
I adore my two brothers too, but I don’t understand what they mean when they say they love me very much. How deep is the love?
I nod my head, “again.” And your father continues.
“Your fiancée, Countess Zechs, is a remarkable woman. His magical abilities are a disappointment, but his political skills are divine.”
I was blindsided by your father’s words. I couldn’t believe it had come from your father’s mouth.
I still can’t believe your father, who values magic above all else, would praise someone whose magical abilities are so disappointing. Normally I’d dismiss them as unworthy of consideration. There’s no one in this castle with less than three magical aptitudes.
I suppose that means you’re good enough that your father would have to admit… I couldn’t shake my disbelief.
I don’t think it’s wrong to think of magic as supreme. In this world, the power of magic is more important than anything else. It permeates every corner of our lives. It means that those who excel in it make the world a better place. I think it’s only right that they should be favored in return.
But that doesn’t mean that other abilities are unnecessary. One of them is political skill, which your fiancee excels at.
Well, it seems my engagement is inevitable. Well, I can’t go against the Duke’s father’s decision.
I sigh inwardly at the disintegration of my future map and shake my head.
“Yes, sir. I accept your engagement.
“I’m counting on you. This is Lord Zechs’ file. Look over it.
“…? Yes, sir. Now, if you’ll excuse me.
I leave your father’s presence, wondering at the thinner-than-expected sheaf of paper.
I went back to my office and looked over the materials that had been given to me. The meeting was less than a month away. Considering the travel time, we would be leaving in a few days. I should have the information in my head by then.
But I froze right away. Because–
My fiancée was, of all people, colorless.
