CH129: Holiday 2
Lecrae runs towards the edge of the water, shouting.
“Ah! Lecrae, that’s not fair! I’m coming too!”
Carol runs after Lecrae.
Leclerc comes to the edge of the surf first. He continues on his way and turns around when he is knee-deep in the water.
Then he comes in late and splashes seawater on Carol.
“Oh my god, it’s so salty!” Carol fired back.
I haven’t heard anything about any involvement between Carroll and Lecrae, so I’m guessing this is the first time they’ve had any real contact.
But the water fights are relentless.
Well, they seem to be on the same wavelength, so it’s no wonder they’re getting along so well.
The others were heading for the beach, so I started to follow them,
“All right, Orn, let’s play first.”
Will tells me with a wry smile.
What do you do in a fight?
“Long swim. There’s no other tourists, so we won’t be bothered.”
I’ve never been in the ocean. Or rather, I’ve never been in a river or any kind of water.
But that doesn’t mean I can’t swim.
Most explorers can swim, not just me.
Some labyrinths have rivers or lakes in them.
If we need a material in it, we have to dive to get it by ourselves, and if we fall into the water by accident, we may die if we cannot swim, so it is practically an essential skill for explorers.
Furthermore, it is desirable that the explorer be able to swim to some extent even while wearing gear.
<Swimming practice is part of the training for new recruits in the Yaoten no Ginrabbit.
“Sounds like fun. I’m in.
I’ve never done long-distance swimming before, but I think I can handle it.
It’s just for fun.
“All right, it’s settled. Who else is up for this?
Will’s gonna call out to the others.
As a result, the three people participating in the swim were me, Will, and Rex, the ace of the A rank party.
So what’s the rule?
Mr. Rex will check the rules with Will.
Will thinks for a moment and then turns his right hand towards the sea.
Then a magic circle appears in the sky above the sea, and long, thin sticks made of rock rain down from it.
The bars are perpendicular to the sea surface, with some of them protruding from the surface.
“First one to touch that stick wins, right?”
The distance from here to the pole is about a hundred meters.
I’m okay with that.
“All right, let’s get started.”
Log gives the order to start, and the three of us wait side by side on the beach.
“Oh, yes. Orn, no sorcery.
“I know. I’m not gonna do anything stupid.”
Okay, let’s go.
When we’re ready, Log raises his right arm in a vocal shout.
“Shoo-shoo! Good luck!” Mr. Orn, good luck…!”
“Will, if you lose, you get a penalty! But only if you lose!” Why am I the only one?
“Rex, this is your chance to beat an S-ranked explorer! Stay strong~.”
Everyone who was playing on the beach has gathered.
Log raises his right arm when we’re ready.
“Then let’s go! Lady… Go!
With the call of the log, we run along the beach in unison, aiming for the stick that peeks out from the sea.
Move your feet, being careful not to get your feet caught in the sand.
The feet begin to be immersed in seawater, and the knees and thighs gradually move up to the immersed position.
Switch to swimming at the right moment.
It is the first time for me to swim in seawater, but I feel a little resistance when I swim compared with freshwater such as rivers and lakes.
But it’s much easier to swim than when you’re wearing clothes, and you’ll be able to swim all the way to the target point without any problems.
Swim with your hands in front of you while flapping your legs.
I check the position of Will and Rex, who are swimming side by side when they catch their breath, and it seems that they are not so far apart.
You keep swimming as fast as you can, and you are almost at the target, the pole.
The result of the game is…
“Okay! I win!”
They touched the stick before I touched it.
“Maybe it’s because you’re always relying on buffs.”
Will gives me a look of triumph.
“That hurts my ears when you say it.”
I can’t say I have any excuse, but my physical abilities rank below those of an advanced explorer.
He knew that without the buffs he was inferior to both of them, since he was making up the difference with his support magic and now with his Ki.
Even so, I was able to play competitively until the very last minute, and I was able to move my body without any worries.
Of course I’m disappointed to lose, but inside I feel fine.
After the long-distance swimming competition, we all decided to play beach volleyball, which has recently become a popular sport in the territory of Regulif.
The pairs were decided by drawing lots, and I was paired with Sophie.
If you compare their physical abilities without buffs, Carol is surprisingly the best among them.
Will and Rex would be the top of the list considering their gender and physique, but Carol is far behind them.
I believe it’s because of her unusual abilities.
Her ability is [self-healing].
It’s supposed to heal injuries instantly, but looking at Carol, it doesn’t seem to go beyond that.
Even by doing casual activities such as walking or speaking, we accumulate a small amount of fatigue that we are not aware of.
In other words, it is impossible for humans to perform at their best in the true sense of the word.
But it’s my opinion that Carroll’s abilities make that possible.
When I first started teaching, I’d gasp for air, but these days it’s almost non-existent.
You are always in “perfect condition” because your body is recovering more than it is fatigued.
Whether I’m right or not, Carol’s physical abilities are off the charts.
I mean… I’m unbeatable in this beach volleyball thing.
We’re next in line to face Carol.
“I’m the strongest and the best right now, so I’m going to beat Shisou too!”
Carol, facing me over the net, loudly declares war on me.
“Sophie, let’s go break Carol’s nose for getting carried away.”
He calls out to Sophie, who is standing next to him, following Carol’s announcement.
“Yes, yes! Carol, I’m gonna win!”
Sophie’s serve started the match.
Sophie hits a ball that lands in the enemy’s court and Carroll moves to the drop spot early and receives it with no difficulty.
Carol’s pair then tossed a low, fast toss near the net, and Carol was already in position to spike.
It’s what you call a fast attack.
Carroll swings down with a right hand as if slamming into a ball.
She hits a ball into our court… She blocks it effortlessly.
The ball falls into Carol’s court after I block it.
“What? You weren’t here a minute ago! Why are you right in front of me?
Carol looks surprised that her spike was blocked by me.
“You’ve got too much on your face. I could see it on your face that you’re going to score fast.”
“What? No way!”
Carol’s flapping her own face when she hears what I’m saying.
Of course it’s not true.
He looked like he was planning something, but I couldn’t tell what.
But I’m used to seeing Carol’s moves through her mentor.
No matter how great her moves are, she can handle them in this small court after she sees them.
Well, it’s not gonna be this perfect every time.
The game against Carol and her team ended with us winning after a point-scoring duel.
After that, they played games with other pairs, or went into the sea to play other games, and enjoyed playing here in their own way.
In the evening, I was relaxing in the rest area and watching everyone still playing.
(It’s nice to have a day like this once in a while.)
“Um, Mr. Orn, are you not feeling well?”
I was idly watching the others playing when I heard Sophie’s voice from the side.
“No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I’m just taking a break. Are you sick, Sophie?
No, I’m fine. Um… Then can I sit next to you?”
Sophie asks, her face slightly downcast.
Of course. Here you go.”
Sophie replies, making sure she has a place to sit.
Sophie’s sitting right next to me.
They’ve been silent for a while.
I like these quiet moments, but now I feel a little uncomfortable because I can feel Sophie’s eyes on me.
It’s like he’s trying to say something, but nothing’s coming out.
When I call out to her, Sophie sounds really surprised.
“Did you have fun today?”
“Uh, yes. It was a lot of fun. It was also a great memory for me to be paired with Mr. Orn in beach volleyball!”
“That’s good. I had a good time today, too. It’s been a long time since I’ve had this much fun without worrying.”
“When Orn-san was in the Brave Party, did you ever go out anywhere with your party members?”
“Not at all, but I didn’t spend the whole day playing.”
Ever since we became explorers, Oliver and I have been thinking first and foremost about getting stronger and conquering the Grand Labyrinth.
Playing in the sea all day like this was unthinkable back then.
But I don’t regret that life. I think those days made me the man I am today.
“Does that mean I have to be that serious about challenging the Grand Labyrinth to reach the deeper levels?”
“You need to take it seriously, but you don’t have to be so stoic. I think we need this kind of time now. It’s not enough to work hard. Besides, the situation between us and Sophie back then was totally different.”
What’s the situation, sir?
“Yeah. You know me and Oliver aren’t from Tutrail? We’re from a village so small it didn’t even show up on the map, and we came to Tutrail so we could be explorers, but we didn’t know anyone and we didn’t know what we were supposed to do. I didn’t know what to do. So for Sophie and the others who have the clan’s backing, my rookie days aren’t going to be much help.”
“I’m trying to get through the Grand Labyrinth by hand… I’m too scared to try.”
“Ha-ha-ha, that’s the right feeling. Sophie and the others have access to information. They don’t have to follow in our footsteps. Sophie and the others can just move forward in their own way.
“Yeah. There’s no right answer, so there’s no rush. Sophie and the others are definitely growing and moving forward.
“… Thank you. It gives me confidence to hear you say that, Mr. Orn.”
“I’m glad to hear it. We’ll start working together again tomorrow.”
